The One Sign & Digital Newcastle Darts Open 2017 took place on Saturday 2nd December at ‘The Park Hotel’ in Tynemouth. With over 230 players entered from around the country, it was a big success even with a sudden venue change one week before the competition.
With a host of big names in attendance such as Andy Boulton, Terry Temple, Gary Robson, Ryan Joyce, Kevin McDine, Gary Stone, Ryan Murray, Nathan Aspinall, Callum Loose and Matt Padgett to name a few, along with our two North-East finalists Chris Dobey and Adam Hunt, the day featured some fantastic darts.
The day kicked off with a cracker of a game on Board 12 where PDC Star Andy Boulton went up against BDO Gold Cup Winner, Ryan Joyce. This game gathered a large crowd who witnessed Andy Boulton wire double 12 for a perfect leg.
The game went down to 3-3 with Ryan’s darts, and the PDC Star ‘X factor’ edged out his opponent.
There was a range of tasty games in the early stages of the competition, with Chris Dobey going the distance in two of his opening 3 matches against Raymond Foreman and Dave Prins.
Adam Hunt was off to a flyer whitewashing 3 of his first opponents including Paul Williams and Kev Thoburn.
PDC Young guns Nathan Aspinall and Callum Loose also dominated their early round matches, moving easily into the last 16.
Moving into the last 16 and the board finalists meeting each other, we had a range of local talent along with PDC and BDO players. World Matchplay Quarter Finalist Kevin McDine brushed passed young PDC player Callan Rydz, with Callum Loose, Chris Dobey, Michael Wood and Gary Robson doing the same, all with 4-1 scorelines.
Hunt went up against fellow PDC player Andy Boulton in the last 16, proving too strong for him and winning 4-2. Aspinall from Greater Manchester, who had a strong run in the World Championship Qualifiers earlier that week defeated fellow PDC player Ryan Murray by 4 legs to 2.
The last game in the last 16 proved to be the most nail biting, with Matt Padgett going up against Benidorm Open Winner Andy Chalmers. It went the distance with the PDC player edging out Chalmers by 4 legs to 3.
As we went into the semi finals, on stage, the crowd were in for a treat with 4 PDC players battling out for the £2,000 first prize.
Chris came back from a 4-2 deficit to clinch the win against Callum Loose to be the first player through to the final and Adam Hunt joined him by demolishing Padgett 5-1 with a 33.13 average.
As always between Chris and Adam, their games go the distance, with one always edging out the other in a last leg decider. On the day, Dobey proved to be the better playing coming back from a 4-1 scoreline to win 5-4 and be crowned ‘One Sign & Digital Newcastle Darts Open 2017’.
Thank you to everyone who attended and made it a great day. Plans for the Newcastle Open 2018 are already underway!
