After filling up after 5 days of announcing the event a couple of months ago, with 64 players and 32 pairs all paid up, the first Grand Slam Pairs Competition was looking to be a fantastic tournament and it certainly delivered.
On Saturday 14th April with an array of talent from all over the North East, including BDO, PDC , County players and more, the day was enjoyed by all.
The competition consisted of 8 groups of 4 pairs, playing a round robin format with the top two qualifying for the last 16 and into the prize money. With 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw, there was drama in every group meaning each leg won was vital.
Chris Dobey and Carl Hamilton proved to be a force in the group stages winning 4-0, 4-0, 4-0 to progress through as top dogs not dropping a single leg. Tim Embling and Butch advanced in second place from the same group due to a better leg difference of 2 to James Ankers and Ian Atkinson.
Each other group the top two pairs moved through with a better points difference than their rivals.
The last 16 saw Adam Hunt and Scott Hunt crash out to Adam Young and Anthony Hasson 4 legs to 0, with Kevin McDine and Ryan Joyce advancing to the last 8 with a great game against Shaun Matthews and Allan Edwards.
Moving onto the semi finals we had a superb quartet of pairs in Chris Dobey & Carl Hamilton vs Kevin McDine & Ryan Joyce / Darren Patton & Geoff Murray vs Harry Robinson & David Gradwell.
Dobey & Hamilton went down to a last leg decider against McDine & Joyce, with the latter winning the game 5-4.
Robinson & Gradwell moved into the final with a 5-3 win over Patton & Murray.
Played on stage with marker Steven Wright and Caller Andy Cochrane, the final lead up to its expectations with another thrilling last leg decider. Both pairs played outstanding throughout the day but Harry Robinson and David Gradwell came out on top 5-4.
